Renin is an enzyme secreted by the juxtaglomerular cells in the kidneys in response to low blood pressure, low sodium levels, or sympathetic nervous system activation. It catalyzes the conversion of angiotensinogen, a plasma protein produced by the liver, into angiotensin I.
