L&D nurses have a diverse set of responsibilities, including:
- Monitoring Vital Signs: Keeping track of the mother's blood pressure, heart rate, and fetal heart rate to ensure the health of both mother and baby. - Assisting with Pain Management: Administering pain relief options such as epidurals, and providing comfort measures like breathing techniques and massage. - Supporting the Mother: Offering emotional and physical support, including guiding mothers through labor positions and providing encouragement. - Medical Interventions: Assisting with procedures like inductions, cesarean sections, and episiotomies. - Newborn Care: Immediately after birth, assessing the newborn's health and performing initial care activities like suctioning airways and cutting the umbilical cord.
