Burns are classified based on the depth of the injury:
- First-degree burns affect only the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) and cause redness and pain. - Second-degree burns affect both the outer layer and the underlying layer of skin (dermis), causing swelling, redness, blistering, and more intense pain. - Third-degree burns extend into deeper tissues, causing white or blackened, charred skin that may be numb due to nerve damage.
