Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) are a type of bacteria that have developed resistance to the antibiotic vancomycin, which is often used to treat severe infections. Enterococci are normally present in the human intestines and the female genital tract but can cause serious infections in other parts of the body, especially in patients with weakened immune systems.
