What is the Procedure for Nasogastric Tube Insertion?
1. Preparation: Verify the patient's identity and explain the procedure. Ensure all necessary equipment is available. 2. Positioning: Place the patient in a high Fowler’s position. 3. Measurement: Measure the tube from the tip of the nose to the earlobe and then to the xiphoid process. Mark the length. 4. Lubrication: Lubricate the tip of the tube. 5. Insertion: Gently insert the tube through the nostril, directing it backward and downward. Ask the patient to swallow to facilitate passage. 6. Confirmation: Confirm placement by aspirating stomach contents and checking pH, or by auscultating air insufflated through the tube.
