Pseudomembranous colitis is an inflammatory condition of the colon commonly caused by an overgrowth of Clostridium difficile bacteria. This condition often occurs after the use of antibiotics, which can disrupt the normal balance of bacteria in the gut, allowing C. difficile to proliferate. It is characterized by the presence of pseudomembranes on the colon wall, visible upon endoscopic examination.
