Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) is a serious condition characterized by the triad of hemolytic anemia, acute kidney failure (uremia), and a low platelet count (thrombocytopenia). This condition often follows a gastrointestinal infection, particularly those caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria. The toxins produced by these bacteria can damage the vascular endothelium, leading to the formation of clots in small blood vessels and subsequent organ damage.
