D Dimer is a fibrin degradation product, a small protein fragment present in the blood after a blood clot dissolves. It is typically undetectable or present at very low levels unless the body is forming and breaking down blood clots. Elevated levels of D Dimer can indicate the presence of an abnormal blood clotting process.
