Nurses play a critical role during a Code Blue. Their responsibilities include:
Initiating the Code Blue: Nurses often are the first to recognize a patient's deteriorating condition and are responsible for calling the Code Blue. Performing CPR: Nurses are trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and may begin chest compressions and ventilation until the Code Blue team arrives. Administering Medications: Nurses may be responsible for drawing up and administering emergency medications as directed by the physician. Using Defibrillators: Nurses may assist in preparing and using a defibrillator to deliver shocks to a patient in cardiac arrest. Documenting Events: Accurate documentation of the events, including times, interventions, and patient responses, is vital during a Code Blue.
