Ensure the patient is in a comfortable position and the environment has sufficient lighting. Select a site, typically the fingertip or sternum. Press down firmly on the site until it blanches (turns white). Release the pressure and use a stopwatch to measure the time it takes for the color to return to normal.
Normal CRT is usually less than 2 seconds. A delayed CRT (greater than 2 seconds) may indicate poor perfusion.
