Explain the procedure to the patient to alleviate anxiety. Measure the tube from the tip of the nose to the earlobe, then to the xiphoid process to estimate the correct length. Lubricate the tip of the tube with a water-soluble lubricant. Insert the tube gently through one of the nostrils, directing it posteriorly and downward. Ask the patient to swallow or drink water to ease the passage of the tube. Advance the tube to the pre-measured length. Verify the placement by aspirating gastric contents and checking the pH or by using radiographic confirmation.
