Positive End-Expiratory Pressure, commonly abbreviated as PEEP, is a critical concept in respiratory care and an essential component of mechanical ventilation. PEEP refers to the pressure in the lungs (above atmospheric pressure) that exists at the end of expiration. It helps to keep the alveoli open, improving oxygenation and preventing alveolar collapse, which is especially important in patients with conditions like acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
