Hyaline Membrane Disease (HMD), also known as Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS), is a condition primarily seen in premature infants. It is caused by a deficiency of surfactant, which is a substance that helps keep the air sacs in the lungs open. This deficiency leads to the collapse of the air sacs, making breathing difficult.
