Droplet transmission occurs when respiratory droplets carrying infectious pathogens are expelled from an infected person and come into contact with the mucous membranes of another individual. These droplets are typically larger than 5 micrometers in diameter and can travel short distances, usually up to 6 feet. Common diseases spread through droplet transmission include influenza, pertussis (whooping cough), and COVID-19.
