Clostridium difficile is a spore-forming bacterium that can be found in the natural environment, including soil and human intestines. It becomes problematic when the normal balance of bacteria in the gut is disrupted, often due to antibiotic therapy, allowing C. diff to proliferate. This overgrowth can lead to C. diff infection (CDI), characterized by diarrhea, fever, nausea, and abdominal pain.
