An aplastic crisis is a temporary cessation of red blood cell production by the bone marrow. This condition is often triggered by infection with the parvovirus B19, which affects the red blood cell precursors. It is particularly significant in patients with chronic hemolytic anemias, such as sickle cell disease and hereditary spherocytosis, where it can lead to severe anemia.
