What Constitutes the Peripheral Nervous System?

The PNS is divided into two main parts: the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. The somatic nervous system is responsible for voluntary movements and transmitting sensory information to the CNS. In contrast, the autonomic nervous system regulates involuntary functions such as heart rate, digestion, and respiratory rate. The autonomic system is further divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, which have opposing effects on organ function.
