Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are a class of medications that reduce the production of acid in the stomach. They are commonly used to treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. These medications work by blocking the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that produces acid, thereby decreasing the acid levels and allowing healing of the esophagus and stomach lining.
