Plasmodium parasites are single-celled organisms responsible for causing malaria, a severe and sometimes fatal disease. There are five species that infect humans: Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium knowlesi. These parasites are transmitted through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.
