What are Oropharyngeal and Nasopharyngeal Airways?
Oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airways are adjuncts used to ensure an open airway, particularly in patients who are at risk of airway obstruction.
Oropharyngeal airways (OPA) are inserted through the mouth and extend to the pharynx; they are most effective in unconscious patients who do not have a gag reflex. Nasopharyngeal airways (NPA), on the other hand, are inserted through the nostril and extend to the nasopharynx. They can be used in conscious patients and those with an intact gag reflex.
