What are Normal and Abnormal Fasting Plasma Glucose Levels?
Normal fasting blood glucose levels are typically between 70 and 100 mg/dL (3.9 to 5.6 mmol/L). A fasting blood glucose level between 100 and 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L) indicates prediabetes, while a level of 126 mg/dL (7 mmol/L) or higher on two separate occasions is indicative of diabetes. Nurses should be familiar with these values to interpret results accurately and provide appropriate patient education.
