Proper technique is crucial for obtaining accurate blood pressure readings:
Ensure the cuff is the appropriate size for the patient's arm to avoid inaccurate readings. Position the cuff on the upper arm, aligning the artery marker with the brachial artery. Instruct the patient to sit quietly for at least five minutes before the measurement. Place the arm at heart level, supported on a flat surface, with the palm facing up. Inflate the cuff until the pulse is no longer palpable, then inflate 20-30 mmHg beyond this point. Slowly deflate the cuff and listen for the first and last Korotkoff sounds, which indicate systolic and diastolic pressures, respectively.
