During an abdominal surgery, the Balfour Retractor is used after the initial incision has been made. The lateral blades are inserted into the incision and then adjusted to pull back the tissue. This creates a wider opening, allowing the surgical team to see and access the internal organs. The self-retaining mechanism is then engaged to keep the retractor in place, freeing up the hands of the surgical team for other tasks.
