To measure the Cobb angle, an X-ray of the spine is taken. The most tilted vertebrae at the top and bottom of the curve are identified. Lines are drawn parallel to the endplates of these vertebrae, and the angle formed at their intersection is the Cobb angle. A Cobb angle greater than 10 degrees is typically indicative of scoliosis.
