During an NST, the expectant mother will be asked to lie down or sit in a comfortable position. Two belts with sensors are placed on her abdomen. One sensor measures the fetal heart rate, while the other measures uterine contractions. The test usually lasts about 20-30 minutes, during which time the mother may be asked to press a button whenever she feels the baby move.
