Nursing licenses are issued by state Boards of Nursing after candidates pass the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination). Licenses must be renewed periodically, usually every two to three years, and this process often requires proof of continuing education and competency. Some states have adopted the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), which allows nurses to have one multistate license and practice in their home state and other compact states.
