Formula Preparation - Nursing Science

What is Formula Preparation?

Formula preparation is the process of mixing infant formula powder or concentrate with water to create a nutritionally balanced liquid for infant feeding. This process is essential for ensuring that the baby receives adequate nutrition, especially when breastfeeding is not an option.
Nutritional adequacy: Properly prepared formula ensures that the baby gets all the essential nutrients.
Safety: Incorrect preparation can lead to contamination or improper dilution, which could harm the baby.
Digestive health: Properly mixed formula helps prevent digestive issues like constipation or diarrhea.

What are the Types of Infant Formula?

There are several types of infant formula available:
Cow's milk-based formula
Soy-based formula
Hypoallergenic formula for babies with allergies
Specialty formulas for premature infants or those with specific medical conditions

Steps for Preparing Infant Formula

Wash your hands thoroughly before starting.
Clean and sterilize all bottles, nipples, and other feeding equipment.
Boil water and let it cool to the recommended temperature (usually 70°C or 158°F).
Measure the correct amount of water and pour it into the bottle.
Add the appropriate amount of formula powder or concentrate.
Close the bottle and shake well to mix.
Check the temperature of the formula by dropping a little on the inside of your wrist. It should be lukewarm, not hot.

How to Store Prepared Formula

Prepared formula can be stored in the refrigerator at 4°C (39°F) for up to 24 hours. Any unused formula should be discarded after this period to prevent bacterial growth.
Using unsterilized equipment
Not following the manufacturer's instructions
Adding too much or too little water
Using expired formula
Storing prepared formula at room temperature for too long

What to Do if You Have Questions?
