Call for Help: Activate the emergency response system and call for a defibrillator.
Perform CPR: Begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until the defibrillator arrives.
Attach the Defibrillator: Place the defibrillator pads on the patient's chest as indicated.
Analyze Rhythm: Allow the defibrillator to analyze the heart rhythm.
Deliver Shock: If a shockable rhythm is detected, ensure everyone is clear of the patient and deliver the shock.
Resume CPR: Continue CPR immediately after the shock and follow further instructions from the defibrillator.

Complications and Considerations

While defibrillation is generally safe, there are potential complications, including burns from the pads, myocardial injury, and arrhythmias. Nurses must be aware of these risks and monitor the patient closely post-defibrillation. Additionally, nurses should ensure that the defibrillator is regularly maintained and that they are familiar with the device's operation.

Training and Competence

Nurses must undergo regular training and certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) to remain proficient in defibrillation. This training involves both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, including simulated scenarios.
